It's not like I hadn't tried to get my hands on a copy before. But apparently it is banned in several stores. Wal-Mart doesn't carry it. Target didn't seem to have it. And neither did Wegman's. Even the local library only had two copies within the 20-plus library system, and both were checked out. I honestly wondered how a book that was so inaccessible could be on the NY Times Best Seller List. And I began to feel like getting a copy of my own was akin to shopping on the black market.
Before I even had the chance to open the cover I was invited to a book club meeting to discuss the book. I hadn't read so much as a paragraph yet, but since there was going to be wine I happily went along. What followed was one of the most hilarious nights of my life.
The other women of the book club, all established, serious-seeming mothers, gushed about how the life had changed their lives. Reading it had turned them into honeymooners again. It had saved at least one marriage. It had.... done things that I don't feel comfortable writing here.
It also instigated a game of "Never have I ever..." which was considerably more entertaining than it ever was back in college. There must be something about this book that makes women feel so liberated.
They freely admit that it is terribly written. It is also a common theme, written and re-written in thousands of other books. So what is it about Fifty Shades that turns women into walking advertisements for a paperback book?
